Who answers your phone on the beach?
The small-business holiday paradox: the person who most needs a fortnight off is the person whose absence costs enquiries. Here's the honest menu of what can hold the fort — including the £0 options.

What actually happens to an unattended fortnight
Picture this: calls go to voicemail. Many callers, especially new ones with a competitor's number, don't leave a message. Emails stack up, making the first day back feel worse than the holiday was good. September bookings quietly slip away. You won't see any of this in your accounts. That's why being unreachable costs more than you might think.

The cover menu, priced honestly
- The £0 floor, done properly: a voicemail that actually sells ('back on the 18th, text this number for urgent work, or email — I reply evenings'), an email auto-reply that answers the top three questions instead of just apologising, and holiday hours set on your Google profile. An hour's work; most businesses skip it anyway.
- The automation layer: missed-call text-back ('Sorry to miss you — reply here and I'll come back to you tonight') and booking links that let August fill September without you. Cheap, and the text-back alone rescues a surprising share of would-be voicemail-abandoners.
- The AI front door: an assistant that answers the questions, takes the details, books the slots and sends you only what genuinely needs you — the difference between checking your phone with dread and glancing at it with curiosity. Priced per job, and — honestly — not worth building for one fortnight: it's worth building because the 5pm-to-9am problem is the holiday problem, every single day. The holiday is just when you notice it.
What no cover replaces
The judgement calls are yours. The assistant should say, 'He's back Monday and this is the kind of thing he'll want to handle himself.' This is both true and better than a quick answer from a sunlounger. Cover the questions, capture the details, and protect the decisions. If this makes you realise you haven't booked a holiday for this reason, it's not a time-management issue. It's a systems gap, and you can fix it before summer if you start now.
