Is AI worth it for a small business?
Updated 11 August 2026
The honest answer: sometimes yes, sometimes no — and anyone who tells you it's always worth it is selling something. Here's how to tell for your business.
The short version
AI is worth it when it takes a specific, repetitive job off your plate that's costing you time or customers — answering the same questions, chasing quotes, booking appointments. It's not worth it when it's bolted on for the sake of it. The trick is to start with a real problem, not the technology.
Where it genuinely helps
For most small businesses the wins are in the admin, not the craft:
- Answering the same customer questions, day and night, so you're not glued to the phone.
- Taking bookings and cutting no-shows with automatic reminders.
- Drafting quotes, replies and product listings in seconds, so your evenings are yours.
- Chasing invoices politely and automatically.
- Turning reviews, notes or documents into something useful.
Where it's not worth it
Just as important — the honest bit most people skip. AI probably isn't worth it if your admin is already light, if the job genuinely needs a human touch, or if a simple spreadsheet or a phone call does it better. A good adviser will tell you that rather than sell you something you don't need.
What it actually costs
As a rough guide: a focused audit of where AI helps starts from around £495, hands-on training from about £650 for a half-day, and building a first assistant or automation usually runs £2,000–£5,000 plus a little each month to run it — all plus VAT. The honest figure depends entirely on your setup, which is why the first conversation should be free.
How to decide
Pick the one job that eats the most time or loses the most customers. Ask whether a tool that did just that — well, reliably, fitted to how you already work — would pay for itself. If yes, it's worth exploring. If not, don't force it.
