How do I implement AI into my business?
Updated 29 August 2026
You don't need a strategy deck or a big budget. Implementing AI well is mostly about starting small and picking the right first job. Here's the plan.
Start with the problem, not the tool
The businesses that get real value from AI don't start by asking 'how do we use AI?' — they start with 'what's the most annoying, repetitive thing eating our time?'. Nail that and the technology becomes obvious. Start with the tool instead and you'll bolt on something clever that solves nothing.
The five steps
- Pick one job — the single task that costs the most time or loses the most customers (quoting, the phone, no-shows, invoicing). One, not ten.
- Fit it to how you already work — it should plug into your existing booking system, inbox or website, not force you to start over.
- Start small and test it — run it on that one job, check it's accurate on your prices and policies, and see if it genuinely saves the hours you hoped.
- Keep a human in the loop — especially early: the AI drafts and handles the routine, you approve anything that matters.
- Expand only once it's earning — when the first job is clearly paying off, add the next. Compounding beats a big-bang rollout every time.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to automate everything at once.
- Buying a tool before you know the job it's for.
- Letting it guess on facts, prices or anything safety-critical instead of grounding it in your real information.
- Treating it as 'set and forget' — it needs the odd tweak as your business changes.
What it takes from you
Less than people fear. A clear sense of the job, your real information (prices, policies, the questions you get asked), and a little time to test it. The heavy lifting — building it, connecting it, keeping it accurate — is the part worth getting help with.
