API Terms of Use

These terms govern your use of the Katalis developer APIs (the endpoints under /api/v1/, and their keys, docs and free demos — the “APIs”). By creating a developer account, requesting a key, or calling any API, you agree to them. Katalis is a trading name of Curtis Ashley, a sole trader, at 43 East Street, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7SW, United Kingdom, VAT registration number GB 215 2836 23. Questions: katalis@meetkatalis.com.

Your licence to use the APIs

We grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to call the APIs within your plan's limits and these terms. Your API key is yours to keep secret — you're responsible for everything done with it. You can rotate a key from your dashboard at any time; rotation invalidates the old secret immediately and starts a fresh usage history for the new key identifier.

Credits and metering

Plans are metered in credits, not flat calls. Each endpoint has a published credit weight — simple register lookups cost 1 credit, heavier analysis costs more (for example a Business Score is 10 credits and a Fit & Approach Assessment is 25), as shown on each API's page and in your dashboard's cost table. On the free tier, premium endpoints meter at double their standard weight. Requests rejected by the per-key rate ceiling (currently 60 requests/minute) never consume credits. A request that fails on our side (any 5xx response, including one that runs past its time limit) gives its credits back automatically, and the response says how many in its x-credits-refunded header; in a batch, the items we couldn't read are credited back and the response's creditsRefunded says how many. Requests that fail validation after processing has begun (for example a document URL we fetch but cannot read) may consume the endpoint's credits, because the work was done. A paid plan's monthly credits start fresh on the day it's paid for, and on that day each month (an annual plan: the same date each month); unused credits don't carry over. The free plan's refresh 30 days after its month began. Credit weights may change; the published tables are always current.

Accounts and verification

Developer accounts require a verified email address and one further proof that you are a real person: a verified mobile number (SMS code) or, where we can’t text you, a bank-checked payment card through Stripe. Nothing is charged for a card check, the card is removed from our records as soon as it has been checked, and we keep only a one-way fingerprint so one card verifies one free account. This is what keeps the free tier generous and the platform abuse-free. You can close your account at any time from dashboard settings; closure (including deletion of your keys and personal data) is actioned within 30 days, after any live subscription is cancelled.

The free plan and organisations

The free plan is for one person trying the APIs: one free account per person, and one per verified mobile number. Free use from the same organisation is counted together. Where we see a number of free accounts using the same organisation's email domain, their combined free use is limited to a shared monthly total (currently 500 credits, five people's worth). Once that total is reached, free use from that organisation is paused until the 1st of the following month, and calls say so. Paid plans are never affected: an organisation that needs more than the shared free total should take a paid plan for its own allowance. Personal email addresses (such as Gmail or Outlook) are treated as individuals. We may also suspend free accounts we reasonably believe were created to get around these limits.

Data sources and licensing

Some responses are derived from public sources. Company data contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0 (Crown copyright), and you must keep that attribution and licence link if you pass the data on. Environment Agency register data (in the Registers API) is used under the Environment Agency Conditional Licence, and its conditions, including its attribution, apply if you pass that data on. Katalis includes data supplied by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (the SRA Law Firm Check), and you must carry that acknowledgement, with the link, if you pass that data on. The CQC Care Provider Check and CQC Report-Card Intelligence use Care Quality Commission information under the Open Government Licence, and the CQC asks that any service using its information says so: carry that acknowledgement if you pass the data on. The Charity Register Check and Charity Report Intelligence use information from the Charity Commission for England and Wales under the same licence. The other official sources are Crown copyright under the Open Government Licence too: Companies House (including filed accounts), the Payment Practices Reporting service, Contracts Finder and Find a Tender, the Gender Pay Gap Service, the Modern Slavery statement registry, Ofsted, the UK Sanctions List (FCDO), HMRC's Money Laundering Regulations register, the Home Office register of licensed sponsors, the ICO's register of fee payers, and the Bank of England's Bank Rate history; each reply names its source in its attribution field, and that line travels with the data. Where a response returns a company's logo, that is a link to the company's own published brand asset for identification (nominative) use only; logos and trademarks remain the property of their owners, and no licence or endorsement is implied — ensuring your use of a mark is lawful is your responsibility.

Images from the Generative Art API

The Generative Art API draws its images with our own code: no AI model and no stock library is involved. We keep the rights in the generator and its styles. For each image you generate while your key is active, you get a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, change and publish it for any lawful purpose, including commercially, without crediting us. The licence is non-exclusive: the same style, colours and seed give the same image to anyone who asks for them, so you can't claim exclusive rights in an image or register it as a trade mark.

AI-generated output, scores and accuracy

Some responses (summaries, classifications, and any score, rating or “quality” assessment) are generated automatically, in places by AI. They are indicative opinion, not statements of fact, are derived only from the information available at the time, and can be incomplete or wrong. They are not legal, professional, financial, credit or compliance advice, and must not be relied on as the sole basis for a decision about any person or company. You are responsible for verifying anything important.

UK Sanctions List results

We say a company is on the UK Sanctions List only when it matches a UK entry by its company number, or by its exact registered name and address. Anything else comes back as not matched, which is not a clearance: companies owned or controlled by someone on the list aren't named on it, and the list changes daily. This is not sanctions screening or compliance advice, and relying on it doesn't replace your own due diligence or the official list (search-uk-sanctions-list.service.gov.uk). Wherever you show a sanctions result to anyone, show it with its says and note wording and the list date, and never present it as a clearance or as “not sanctioned”.

Acceptable use

Please use the APIs lawfully and reasonably. You must not: rebuild or redistribute a bulk copy of an underlying source (e.g. mirror a public register); attempt to re-identify individuals or use the APIs to process other people's personal data unlawfully; publish any score or output in a false, misleading or defamatory way; resell raw API responses as a competing dataset; or try to bypass rate limits, credit metering or security. We may suspend or revoke a key that breaches these terms or that risks our own access to a source.

No warranty

The APIs are provided in good faith and “as is” and “as available”, with no warranties of any kind — including accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability.

Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Katalis is not liable for any loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, the APIs or their output. Nothing here limits any liability that cannot legally be limited.

Your responsibility and indemnity

You are responsible for how you use the APIs and their output, including anything you build, publish or decide based on them. You agree to indemnify Katalis against claims, losses and costs arising from your use of the APIs or your breach of these terms.

Changes, suspension and payments

We may change, suspend or discontinue any API, and may update these terms — the date above shows the last change. Paid plans are billed as described at sign-up (prices exclusive of VAT, added at checkout with a VAT invoice) and can be cancelled anytime — you keep access for the period you've paid for. If a renewal payment doesn't go through, your plan ends that day, the key stops and nothing is charged for the new period; you can start a plan again any time. If a payment is refunded in full, or disputed with your card provider, the plan ends that day and the key stops. Credit weights and quotas are as published on the plan pages and in your dashboard.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any disputes are subject to the courts of England and Wales.
