SRA Law Firm Check

1 credit / call

Is this an SRA-authorised law firm, what kind, since when, and has that changed.

Authorised or not, with conditions, ceased, revoked or intervened; since when; the kind of firm; work areas, offices and head office; trading and former names; the company number; plus a feed of every change on the register since a date.

Every solicitors' firm in England and Wales is authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and its status on the SRA's register is the one fact that matters before you instruct, pay, or take a firm on as a counterparty: authorised, authorised with conditions, ceased, revoked, or intervened (the SRA has closed the practice and taken its client files and money). The SRA publishes the register as one 25,000-organisation file with no history. We keep a copy every day and record the differences, so this endpoint says what a firm is today, since when, what kind of firm (recognised body, licensed body, sole practice), what it does, its offices and head office, its trading and former names, and the Companies House number the register holds, matched to the company you asked about; and the changes feed lists every firm added, removed, returned or re-statused since a date. Firms only: no individual solicitor is ever loaded.

what you’d build with it

Conveyancing and property

Before funds move to a firm's client account: authorised today, under this exact name, at this office.

Supplier and panel vetting

A legal panel, an insurer, a lender: every firm on the list checked in one run, and the feed for the day one is intervened.

Counterparty checks

The firm on the other side of a deal, matched by its company number rather than a look-alike name.

Why developers pick it

The history nobody else keeps

The SRA's file has no dates of change; only someone keeping every day's copy can say when a firm was intervened or revoked. We do, since 8 October 2026.

Matched to the company

The register's own Companies House number first, then the company's registered and former names: never a look-alike.

Plain words, the SRA's codes beside them

'Intervened' explained, 'licensed body' explained, and the code kept for anyone who needs it. Attribution as the SRA requires.
